As part of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Junior Secondary School (JSS) in Kenya serves as the bridge between primary and senior secondary education. Spanning Grades 7 to 9, this stage is designed to expose students to a broad-based curriculum, helping them discover their interests, talents, and potential career paths. With a blend of core and optional subjects, Junior Secondary ensures learners acquire essential academic and practical skills while encouraging exploration of specialized areas aligned with their passions.

As part of the CBC’s student-centered approach, career guidance plays a crucial role in Junior Secondary. At this level, learners receive advice and mentorship to help them make informed decisions about their future education and career paths. The diverse subject offerings allow students to explore different fields before selecting more specialized courses in senior secondary school.
Throughout Junior Secondary, practical learning is emphasized, especially in subjects like agriculture, pre-technical education, and home science. This hands-on approach ensures that students not only understand theoretical concepts but also gain real-world skills that will benefit them in the future. Additionally, Information Communication Technology (ICT) is integrated across all subjects, with learners gaining essential digital literacy skills to navigate the modern world.
The CBC system also accommodates learners with special needs. Students with physical, hearing, or sight impairments receive tailored instruction through braille, large print, or Kenyan Sign Language. This inclusivity ensures that every learner has access to quality education and is given the opportunity to thrive in Junior Secondary School.
At the end of Grade 9, students are assessed through the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA). This evaluation determines their readiness to transition to senior secondary education by testing their proficiency in core subjects. The results also provide insights into each student’s strengths, guiding them in choosing the appropriate senior secondary track.
